Course Length: 6-months
This course : Over 11 Classes, you'll study the following three components:
Component 1: Introducing Counselling and Communication Skills
Over many decades the counselling profession has developed the practice of specific counselling and communication skills to assist people seeking help. Through tutor input, demonstration, and practice, you will be introduced to active listening, attending to body language, empathising, and learning how to communicate clearly to build trust and rapport.
Component 2: Developing self-understanding and the helping relationship
In this component you will learn the Core Conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence and why they play such a central role in the work of counselling; and developing a strong and supportive relationship with the person seeking your help. Reflective practice is a key aspect of counselling work and through exercises, reflection, and discussions in class, you will gain greater self-understanding and self-awareness.
Component 3: Developing a range of counselling skills
You will learn and develop a range of skills used in the counselling profession and how to use them effectively. This will include appropriate selection of skills for the helper, and for the stage of counselling. Ethics plays a vital role in counselling work and you will explore key ethical concepts such as confidentiality, level of competency, and boundaries.
